The government at the time was a coalition between the Spanish Landonist Worker's Party, led by newly-appointed Prime Minister Luis Guido, and smaller far left parties. The war officially began after a pronunciamiento, or official declaration of military opposition, was signed by multiple Spanish military leaders against the Spanish Republican government, with general José Sanjurjo being named the figurehead of the group.
